Introduced in early 2000 to replace GBIC connectors, SFP connectors offer greater port density while supporting up to 4.25Gb/s according to IEEE 802.3 and SFF-8472 specifications. The SFP+ variant, introduced in 2006, extends this capability to 10Gb/s while maintaining the same form factor.
